Excellent Location for Exploring London from Your Doorstep
Accommodates 4-6 persons, free broadband

This is our apartment in Bermondsey Street. It is near the top of Bermondsey Street, near Tooley Street, which is the nearest street to the riverside. At this location is the 'More London' development with the modern civic offices alongside older developments like Hays Galleria and imbued with the history of London as long back as you wish to go. Borough High Street leading to London Bridge is the original street into London. Food supplies would have been shipped up the Thames and Hays Galleria would have been a stop-off point. Borough Market, till recently a wholesaler's market but now greatly popular with the 'punters' is a reflection of this food history. For more history, you may also research Southwark Cathedral and the Bishop of London's residence with its own jail, The Clink. Add in the literate influences of Shakespeare and Dickens and you have a great mixture of history, visual spendidness and satisfying food and drink pleasures to observe and explore.

Our apartment here is a two bedroom (with separate livingroom etc) but can be presented as a one bedroom. We provide cleaning services, with linen change, and whatever is needed for a short stay. Unlimited broadband usage is included. You can enjoy making your own food - or just re-heating a takeaway from one of the many local restaurants - in the full kitchen.

Did I mention the views from the riverside? Just standing here on the riverside, you can see the detail of the City of London, Tower Bridge and attractions like the HMS Belfast docked on the riverside. There is no direct view from the apartment of the river.

You don't have far to walk to the tube. 3 minutes saunter should take you to London Bridge station, which has the Jubilee and Northern Lines and also the overground mainline lines. Examination of the timetables and tube maps confirms that you can get almost anywhere in London relatively efficiently from this strategic point. 5 minutes to Trafalgar Square by overground train, less than 8 minutes to Green Park and the West End by tube, 10 minutes to Canary Wharf, 10 minutes to Greenwich by train and just 4 stops to Holborn for Covent Garden. Check Maps on tfl.gov.uk for details.

There is nothing like a good walk along the South Bank and you are unlikely to be alone as the place is a magnet for tourists and locals and anyone who wants a pleasant place to exercise. If you work in the City, 10 minutes walk across the invigorating London or Tower Bridges is a good start to your day.

I haven't mentioned Vinopolis (for wine lovers), Shakespeare Globe Theatre, Tate Modern, or Millennium Bridge (which crosses the river to St Pauls Cathedral). South Bank Arts Centre is walkable, especially if you take the direct street route which excludes the loop of the river, and then you get to the London Eye - or take the slow route along the riverside, the full walk is very popular and has great views of London all the way.

The apartment is modern in style, in a quality residential development. It is within a converted building so this first floor apartment has high ceilings. It is 850 square feet, with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one is shower/toilet, the other with full bath/shower/toilet). Its surprising quietness is very appreciated by those who stay.

The heating in the apartment was recently updated to a modern 'far infra red' radiant heating system. This is a brilliant concept and we changed it as the ceilings were high and people from hot climates did not understand how to dress so ended up putting the heating level to distressingly high temperatures, like 25C and above. The old convection heaters make heat rise, but the new ceiling hung heating heats the floor and what it radiates first, like the sun: when you stand in the sun, you feel it warm you directly, right? In fact, although heat should and does rise, when I tested it the floor level was warmer than the higher level.

We have an air conditioning unit but this year [2015] I will have solar film on the large south facing windows reducing solar heat gain by 60%. The sun is the main cause of excess heat, especially in the afternoons, so I advise people to close the curtains and not leave the windows open in the high afternoon on the hottest days, given that there is interior ventilation, so leaving lots of windows open just lets in dust and allows in hot air, which you'll then struggle to get rid of in the cooler evenings. If the high sun is allowed in, the floor and walls act like a storage heater and it takes time to diffuse the heat. The solution is to film the windows, given that people don't always take my advice to lower the curtains.

Bermondsey Street is a one way street the width of two cars. There are no buses along the route, just cars. The street noise is normal - through open windows you can hear cars, though the traffic is less in the evenings etc. Compared to that, there is some railway sound but it is a whisper, and in fact quite interesting to listen, if you can, to the roll-call of place names, like the 'Shipping News'.

PLEASE NOTE: This apartment is one of two we have in London Bridge, the other being off Borough High Street, which is the other side of London Bridge station. The other apartment is listed on this site: http://www.shortstay-london.com/apts.php?ID=100 or HomeAway: http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p162500 Please discuss with us because allocation depends on our bookings schedule. If you can be flexible, please do so as it helps us to run the business if we can allocate either apartment, and we think they are equivalent.

Great Experience times 2
I have stayed in this flat in 2013 and again in 2015 years, 10 days or so each stay. The flat is very comfortable and well located. There is easy access to landmarks by foot. Walk across the Tower Bridge to the Tower of London. To range farther, the flat is close to the London Bridge Train Station and tube station combination. Get your 1 week "Oyster card" transportation pass and move about freely on train, tube or bus. This flat is equipped to take advantage of close-by conveniences such as grocery stores and coffee shops and reasonably close to the Borough Market, which is recommendable on it's own. 5 stars .....

Great flat!
My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay in this apartment. It was exactly as described- spacious, bright, clean and well equipped. Beds were very comfortable, and we loved the luxury of having 2 bathrooms. The location was fantastic-- iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tate Modern, the Globe, etc, were all within 10-20 minutes on foot. You could easily spend several days just exploring the immediate area. But having a tube station just a short walk away meant that the rest of London was also within easy reach. We even used the Tube both coming from and going to Heathrow without any problems. We especially appreciated having a Tesco and a couple of food takeout places just a half block away. It was a treat to return home after a long day of sightseeing and be able to relax with a glass of wine. We would be happy to stay here again on a future visit.

Highly recommended.
I would highly recommend this vacation rental. Location is a five minute walk to the underground transit, five minutes to a bus line, and about five minutes to the riverfront walk that has a perfect view of the Tower Bridge. The apartment itself is clean, contemporary, and comfortable. It's in a gated complex, and I felt it was a safe area. There are a handful of restaurants and a small grocery store within a few minutes' walk. I would definitely stay here again. My only warning is that there isn't an elevator, so be prepared to drag your luggage up a flight of stairs.

Owner response
There is a lift at the other end of the corridor. It has a different lock so it's simpler to use the stairs but if weight is an issue, then just ask about the lift on arrival. It is a first floor above ground level flat. (There are still 4 steps on the corridor so it is not wheelchair suitable.)
